Review: Team Canada Jerseys

Team Canada's Three Olympic Jerseys

With the Olympics just a couple a weeks away, Team Canada is predicted to be the powerhouse of the games.  They are also one of only a few teams to have alternate jersey that they will wear in Sochi.  This third jersey has gotten mixed reactions from Canadians as it has a primary color of black... something Canada has never done before.  The primary red and white jerseys are very similar to past Canadian jerseys as they have the traditional Canadian maple leaf logo and feature red and white very prominently.  Below is a brief evaluation of each jersey individually.

Red Jersey
This is by far the best of the three Canadian jerseys as the white chest stripe, that contains the maple leaf logo within in it, stands out tremendously.  It immediately grabs your attention and the bright colors will look great on high definition TV!  Additionally, the "cut out" effect of the logo (see picture above) is very creative and adds to a more clean/modern look that Canada may use for years to come.

White Jersey
They are very similar to the red jersey so the white sweaters are a close second.  There is not much to say about these as they are basically the reverse of the red jerseys, but the red chest stripe definitely makes this sweater pop.  Just like the red, these will really stand out on TV.

 Black Alternate
It is not bad, but it is not good.  These alternates are very plain and have a lot of open/blank space on them.  To fix this and make the jerseys pop out a little more, Canada should have added a continuation of the stripe that goes across the chest onto both sleeves of the arm, as the arm sleeves are the main reason these sweaters seem so lifeless.  With that being said, however, the addition of the gold piping on the outside of the stripe on the chest is a nice touch and emphasizes that Canada is out for gold.  Also, I think when we see these jerseys worn in full uniform (with the black pants and black helmets) the all black look will be pretty cool.  The only problem is that Canada's national colors are red and white, not black!

Review: Team USA Jerseys

Most hockey fans today are used to Reebok hockey jerseys, that will not be the case for the 2014 Winter Olympics!  Nike, however, is the manufacturer and they and Team USA have generated jerseys that have gotten mixed reactions from hockey fans around the USA.

Lets start out with the good.  The two things about the jersey that many Americans are happy about is the retro stye logo that was worn during the 60's and 80's.  The logo brings back memories of the team's past while its slight re-modifications contribute a newer more modern look at the same time.  Second, the stripes on the sleeves (more so on the blue jersey) pay tribute to the jersey's worn in 1960 when the team captured its first gold medal.  This "rebirth" of an old jersey was a good idea, but Nike/Team USA made some bad choices with the rest of the jersey, lowering its appeal.

Although it was smart to pay homage to the former teams in our nations history, Nike and our team decided to add some very strange/ugly gimmicks which basically ruin the jersey.  First, instead of using actual laces on the neck of the jersey, fake metallic looking ones were put there instead.  These fake laces live up to the name fake because they look very bad making the jersey look somewhat amateurish.  That is sadly not all, Nike seemed to get a little carried away and inserted stars made of out of the same material as the "laces" all over the jersey's shoulder yoke.  This move makes the look go from somewhat amateurish to straight out ugly.

These jersey's have generated mixed reactions from hockey fans all around America.  Tell us what you think; are the jerseys cool because of their retro aspects or are they ugly because of the rather strange gimmicks?  Let us know in the comments below (click on "Comments" under the post to do so).
